London has recently received a new set of domains under .london. Until the end of this month they are designated for London based organisations and businesses only (.London, 2014) but will soon be opened up to others and can cost up to £50 a year or in the case of the most desired domains, will be put up for auction (BBC, 2014). This is following cities around the world such as .nyc for New York, .berlin in Germany and .wien in Austria (BBC, 2014). Other domains are following closely behind with .scot for Scotland ready for the Commonwealth Games next week and .wales/.cymru to be released for Wales in the near future.
City and country domains are not the only new domains being released. As of the middle of last year there where over 300 domain names already live including .technology. There are expected to be hundreds more over the next few years. (Larsen, 2014)
The .co.uk and .org.uk domains are to be slowly replaced by a simpler .uk domain sometime this year. These will be sold at the same price as the current domains and pre-existing owners of .co.uk and .org.uk domains are being given a 5 year period to switch over. The .co.uk domains are given precedence over the .org.uk domains when the two are owned separately. This does not mean that .co.uk or .org.uk domains are going to be disconnected, if a company wants to retain their domain, they can. (Brown, 2014)
